How Can Affirmations Transform Your Life?

Affirmations are so simple and yet so effective. An affirmation is a statement, often repeated in our heads—that’s it. There isn’t much concentration or focus required. The affirmation’s power, however, lies in its ability to re-shape our thinking and perspective drastically and quickly. Here are 4 ways affirmations can help you.

1. Affirmations quiet our ego’s mental chatter

One of the biggest stumbling blocks to many of the difficulties and complexities we face is mental chatter. It is this constant stream of thinking and ideas that distracts us from being able to focus on what we want—be that stillness and serenity or a specific goal. Mental chatter is the voice in the head that screams, “I can’t do it! I can’t do it!” or “I’m ugly. I’m fat.” Affirmations soothe this wailing like a pacifier to a baby. In moments of fear, panic, or anxiety, repeating to yourself, “I can do this! I can do this!” or “I am beautiful. I am attractive,” is incredibly powerful at helping you do an emotional 180.

2. Affirmations can begin to transform our thinking instantaneously

When we are focusing on “I can do this,” instead of nerves and jitters, we have immediately taken control of ourselves. When we are in control, we immediately feel at ease. Sigh! When we feel powerless is when our fears and worries tend to spiral out of control. Instead of focusing on the fear, saying affirmations gives us a new focus. It is the same concept as women doing deep breathing when they are giving birth—it gives them something else to focus on than the pain they are feeling. A slight change in focus can and does make a world of difference. This tiny little mental trick is a powerful one.

3. Affirmations put us in the driver’s seat

Affirmations can transform our lives by giving us a sense of power and control. Often it doesn’t take much to remind us of how powerful we are. Simply saying, “I am calm. I am cool. I am collected,” before a job interview can take us from nervous to confident in no time.

4. Affirmations can be effective when change is most difficult

True change comes in this manner: first our thoughts, then our words, then our deeds. First we get an idea like, “I’m tired of being overweight.” This gains momentum and turns into saying things like, “I am going to go to the gym 3 times this week.” What follows? Three trips to the gym. The problem arises when our thoughts still want to be couch potatoes. Stating affirmations like, “I go regularly to the gym. I exercise. I workout,” can shape our reluctant thinking. When change seems hardest, that is a sign that one needs to be using affirmations constantly to help change their lagging thinking. As you know, if you hear something often enough, you will start to believe it.

Do Appearances Matter?

So really, does it matter if you’re wearing tattered jeans or a designer business suit? My observations today led me to believe that appearances, the covers we choose to display, DO matter!

I was in a courtroom today, as I was required to participate in a jury selection. And although I was not chosen, I had some time while going through the motions to observe and reflect. I first off have to say that even just GOING to this jury selection was difficult for me, as I did NOT want to be there, but I made the choice to enjoy my day, whatever the outcome. I’m so glad I made that choice, as it allowed me the freedom to learn a valuable lesson!

These are my observations … first, there were the faces. It was VERY obvious that most everyone felt the same way I did, and that they did NOT want to be there. There were faces of displeasure, disgust, disdain and just down-right grumpiness. There were some faces of anticipation, a little confusion … and I think I saw ONE woman smiling!

These faces that we put on are our cover, our front if you will! THIS IS THE FIRST THING PEOPLE SEE, they leave our first, and important, impression! Although I am generally a very happy person, and have a positive outlook on most everything, I was reminded today that a smile is the first step in a fulfilled and rewarding life … NO MATTER what, who or where you are!!

Second, there’s the uniform. Some say “oooh, I love a man in uniform”, or, others hold more of an mind-set of dislike and distrust in authority figures who need to wear uniforms for what they represent; rules, being told what to do, etc. Uniforms instill, for some, fear, respect and even awe. As I realized today, it too is just a cover. Who that person really is, and is meant to be, is underneath that uniform.

My third observation came in the form of costumes. These too are fronts, or covers, we wear. In Canada, lawyers in our Provincial courts are required to wear special outfits. I suppose it is a way of identifying them, or perhaps something passed down from the Queen, I honestly don’t know why we do that here. But, my observation of the other jurors watching these lawyers walk through the hallways and court rooms was very interesting. Although the lawyer is the one who can help you obtain your freedom (if you are the accused of course), we snicker, point and outright feel sorry for this person of power and prestige based on their appearance. Why is that? Is it because of his costume? My observation today was an overwhelming YES! Simply because of the cover he was required to wear, people had less respect for him than they did the police officer standing right next to him.

So, my conclusion in all of this was that yes, our appearance is extremely important. Should we be judged on our appearance? Definitely not, but it happens all the same. What is underneath the cover is what really matters, but, if you want people to get to know the real you, you must appear to be someone they want to get to know! A smile, where it all starts, really goes a LONG way to that end! A clean t-shirt helps too!

Therefore, to put this into a business perspective, one must smile and present yourself in the best appearance possible in order to attract and sustain customers and clients!

The more I am involved in SMM the more I’m getting tired of links being thrown around like a wet noodle because it’s easy to do. They’re FLASHING in my face, telling me to BUY this or do THAT! Sorry ... NOT INTERESTED!!!

Me, Lorri … I am out here to not only make Friends, but create and offer VALUE to those new friends! Do I make Mike Dillard money? Not yet. Will I? Not sure, truthfully, I don’t NEED Mike Dillard money, and I’m okay with that! I DO however, want to support my family in a fashion that I never had growing up. I want to be able to buy my girls what ever prom dress they want … get my daughter’s their first car … build up my retirement stash!! This, to me, is very real!! Isn’t that what most people are searching for? Something REAL?

Is it possible to make LOTS of money? YES!! Is that my goal? NO! My goal is to help you become successful … success means something different to every person! Just establishing what that is for you is a victory in itself! This is ME, Inc.!
